Anfield – 26 May 1989; the best day of my life.
Anfield – 8 April 2008; one of the worst.
However, I am going to try to look for positives out of not just Tuesday night but this season as a whole.
Four Arsenal players stood out at Anfield: Fabregas, Hleb, Clichy and Walcott. Fabregas and Hleb showed once again that they are two of the most accomplished technical players in the world. They never hid, always wanted the ball and in the first 30 minutes they orchestrated as good a demonstration of total football as we will see this year. Cesc - don’t forget - is the lad that threw pizza at Fergie and reminded Mark Hughes that he will always be a total w**ker – a good man to have as the fulcrum of your team.
Clichy was solid at the back and dynamic going forward. Kuyt on their right was never really in the game thanks to young Gael – any opposing right midfielder knows that they have to work extra hard when Gael is on form.
I’ve been critical of Theo this season but I’m happy to eat humble pie. In the last few games he has been sensational; his run to set up our second goal was truly world class. His pace and directness could be a fantastic extra weapon in years to come and a nice alternative to passing ourselves into oblivion. However, I’m not sure how Theo must feel each week with his arse welded to the bench, knowing that a clown like Eboue is keeping him out of the team.
Another positive is that Arsene must now realise that he has to reinforce the squad, if Arsenal are to compete in the English top four and the European elite. Some sensible transfer deals in the summer should see us more able to withstand a nine month season. Eboue, Senderos and a couple of others out; Tomas Rosick-note donated to medical science; three or four fresh faces to complement the nucleus of the team and Eduardo to return (hopefully) in late autumn.
One other addition to the payroll would be nice – Tony Adams as defensive coach. I am at a loss to understand why we haven’t already done it; the man was Mr Arsenal for 20 years, he was our best ever captain, a great leader and a great defender. Whenever I see him on TV as Portsmouth Assistant Manager I shake my head in disbelief that his skills aren’t being utilised at Arsenal.
As for what remains of this season, I am dreading making a second trip to OT on Sunday as the players look shattered and confidence must be low. I’d like to think that the lads can salvage some pride (after the 4-0 drubbing) and get some kind of result, even if it’s a boring draw that costs Moan Utd two points. That sadly would benefit the other half of the Axis of Evil (Chelski) which is rather like being asked if you want to die by hanging or drowning.
1999 to 2001 were lean years for Arsenal but Arsene stormed back with a Double and the Invincibles. Hopefully he can do it again as I am getting so sick of seeing trophies slipping from our grasp.
