Bukayo Saka steps up to successfully slot home during the dramatic penalty shoot-out that Arsenal won 4-1 to lift the 2023 Community Shield

Arsenal removed ‘mental block’ with win over City, says Gunners keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Mikel Arteta's side ended their long losing run against Manchester City with a stunning shootout win in Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.

Arsenal had lost all three meetings with last season’s title rivals but snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when Leandro Trossard cancelled out Cole Palmer’s goal in the 11th minute of added time.

Ramsdale was pivotal to Arsenal's 4-1 victory, saving from Rodri, and said the psychological barrier that has dogged them has now disappeared.

"It's a statement," Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale told ITV. "It's a marker to know we can go and beat Manchester City in a big game when it matters.

"I'm not sure what it'll be like this season. But that mental block is gone. We're ready to push on now."

Arteta, too, was encouraged by the result.

"We showed again that we can compete against an incredible team," he told BBC Radio 5 live.

"There will be so many problems and challenges ahead but we did very well."
