England beat Denmark by a goal to nil to all but secure qualification for the Last 16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, with two Arsenal players starting in the Group D matchup.
Alessia Russo kept her place in the England side with Sarina Wiegman bringing in Rachel Daly and Lauren James, who scored the opener in sensational style, cutting onto her right foot and bending the ball into the far corner.
Arsenal’s new striker had plenty of chances in the 1-0 win over Haiti in England’s opening game but could not get into the game as much against Denmark, with what looked to be a serious knee injury to star midfielder Kiera Walsh slowing England’s momentum, certainly in the second half.
Russo did fire a shot wide with nineteen minutes to go after driving into the penalty area, before being replaced by Tottenham Hotspur striker Bethany England. Lotte Wubben-Moy was an unused substitute.
Young midfielder Kathrine Kuhl played well for Denmark and featured for the entirety of the Group D fixture. Kuhl tested Mary Earps seven minutes into the second half, making a smart run into the box but only prodding a shot at the Manchester United goalkeeper, who made a simple save.
Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall was on punditry duty once again in the BBC studio, with many viewers on social media praising the Swede for his insight. Up to three more Arsenal players will be in action on Saturday, as Sweden go up against Italy.
