Arsenal Women’s defence could feature a returning Leah Williamson when the Gunners take on Reading in the Continental Cup on Wednesday.

The England star is close to returning from an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury, and could feature for Arsenal in their midweek cup tie.

Arsenal centre-back Amanda Ilestedt discussed the workings of a potential partnership between her and Williamson, with both defenders usually playing as right centre-backs.

“First of all I am really happy for her that she is close to a comeback,” Ilestedt said of Williamson.

“She’s a great player and we really need her in the squad, so I’m happy for her. But who is playing and not playing, if it’s on the right side or left side, we haven’t really talked about that, it’s Jonas’ decision. So we will see!”

Ilestedt has formed a strong partnership with Lotte Wubben-Moy, and said “our relationship on the field has been really growing.”

“I think we have had a good season so far. Obviously it takes a while to get those relationships- it’s not like it goes like this and everything is perfect. It’s something that you work on every day in training and also in games.”

The Swedish defender has also played alongside a new right-back in January signing Emily Fox. “I think she has adapted very well in the team,” said Ilestedt.

“It’s an everyday development so it’s something we are working on but so far she has been doing very well.”

Reflecting on Arsenal’s defensive problems so far this season, the 31-year-old said: “The opponent is not creating that many chances but they are usually very very good, and this is something that we really want to prevent.

"Our goal is to end the game with zero goals against us, it’s always something that we are striving for and aiming to be better at.”
