Arsenal Await Our Final Day Premier League Title Fate
Arsenal fans have rightly been very pleased with the progress that the club have made following on from the appointment of 42 year old Spaniard and former fan favourite, Mikel Arteta.
We have clearly been on an upward curve since, and things really came together for us in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, and had it not been for a late hiccup in our form, as we know, we pushed Pep Guardiola's expensively assembled squad to within five points of the title.
Despite the obvious disappointment and frustration, it was a marked improvement though, and with the board at the Emirates Stadium backing Arteta again in the summer transfer window, there were solid hopes that we could go one step further this year and get ourselves over the line and premier league odds did reflect that.We have undoubtedly shown further improvement, and greater consistency this year as well, and with 37 Premier League games played, we have led the league for large periods of time, and with games in hand now rectified, we have closed the gap on Manchester City to just two points, and we have the tiniest of advantages when it comes to goal difference.
With one match left to play, we have pushed the title race right to the last game of the season and everything will now be decided in the final 90 minutes of the year.
City face West Ham United, and with David Moyes departing this summer, he will undoubtedly want to go out with a notable victory, and Guardiola's side will be doing their best to not get distracted by the upcoming FA Cup final derby with Manchester United.
For us, it is Everton, who largely have nothing to play for, so it is set to be a tantalising final day curtain call. All we can do is win and win comfortably to really put the final ounce of pressure on City that we can.
But whatever happens, this has been another season of improvement, and another step under Arteta and even if our 20 year wait for a title does continue, when the dust settles on the disappointment, there cannot be many fans who will not appreciate, or enjoy, just how close we pushed it again. In closing the points gap, we have tangibly proven that the 2022/23 campaign was not a fluke, or a one off, and we have clearly built on it and pushed ourselves even closer.
With the right moves being made again during the summer transfer window, given the grounding and the foundations that we have, there is absolutely no reason to think that we cannot expect another year of notable improvement, and that we could not really push in 2024/25 and eradicate what could be simply a two point gap.
Turn one defeat into a victory and this season would already be wildly different, and that would not really take too much to make happen when you consider the five defeats that we did have this year.
Having demonstrated defensive improvement that has seen us concede fewer goals than anyone else, along with keeping the most clean sheets this year, that we could not eek a little bit more out next time around, as we will again be more experienced and savvy as a group.
A touch more cover would not go amiss either. One thing is for sure though, this season has genuinely established us as real title contenders, and we have to embrace that positive progress and then just demand more.
