Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy has been included in the England squad for the 2023 Women’s World Cup, whilst the tournament comes too soon for Beth Mead despite her positive progression after suffering an ACL injury.

With something of a defensive shortage for the Lionesses, Wubben-Moy’s inclusion comes as no surprise after a season in which she has continued to improve in an Arsenal shirt. The centre back is capable of playing out from the back and is strong in the tackle, as well as a calm head at the back.

Beth Mead scored six goals at last summer’s Euros, winning the golden boot and being named player of the tournament as England emerged victorious, but Mead will not be on the plane Down Under, despite being ahead of schedule with her recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

In Saturday’s matchday programme, Mead discussed her World Cup hopes. "My motivation was to get as close to the World Cup as possible and that's what I've been striving to do with my rehab. I'm not going to make that but it has given me a target to push towards"

England captain Leah Williamson suffered an ACL injury in Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester United last month, meaning she was immediately ruled out of the World Cup. The 26 year old is a huge loss on and off the pitch, especially with injury doubts over her centre back partner Millie Bright.

Despite a lack of Arsenal representation in the England squad, plenty of Wubben-Moy’s club teammates will be playing a role down under, with plenty of squads yet to be announced. Both Katie McCabe and Lia Walti will captain their nations, whilst Australians Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley will be playing on home turf for their national side.
