After going behind to WSL top scorer Khadija Shaw’s fifth minute header, Arsenal Women were in for a difficult afternoon against Manchester City as they looked to go second in the table in a thrilling title race.
However, Frida Maanum’s equaliser before a Katie McCabe thunderbolt turned the game on its head in the second half in front of a sold out, jubilant Meadow Park crowd.
It was no surprise to see Jonas Eidevall in a cheerful mood as he talked to journalists after the game, and he was quick to praise the character of his side.
“I told them after that I’m lost for words. This block [of fixtures], when I see my time so far as Arsenal head coach, has been by far the most competitive block” said the Swede.
“We’ve played Chelsea twice, we’ve played Bayern Munich twice, we’ve played City and we had Tottenham away. The amount of games that we’ve played, but then you look at our injury situation and how it changed during the games and managing results not going our way.”
Eidevall believes that his team “just keep putting the left foot in front of the right foot” and continue to move forward, despite what is thrown at them.
One player who encapsulated this mentality perfectly not just today but throughout her career is Katie McCabe, who was wearing a protective boot after Wednesday’s quarter-final win against Bayern Munich following an injury.
McCabe scored Arsenal’s winner this afternoon with a rocket into the top corner, and reflected on her recovery from injury. “My foot wasn’t good on Wednesday I have to say, it was absolutely rattled- I don’t know if you’ve seen the video of it but our medical team have done an unbelievable job on making a quick turnaround”.
“My foot has been in ice the last four days trying to get swelling down, it’s well padded up but it still works!” And work it did, what a strike it was by the Irishwoman.
