Arsenal travel to northern France for their Champions League clash with Lens.

Mikel Arteta's in-form side visit the Stade Bollaert on Tuesday evening for the second match in Group B.

The Gunners routed PSV 4-0 at the Emirates on their return to Champions League action after six long years.

The North Londoners remain unbeaten in the Premier League after seven games (won five, drawn two), following on from 4-0 thrashing of Bournemouth on the south coast on Saturday - with Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, Kai Havertz and Ben White all getting on the scoresheet.

Lens, who drew with Sevilla in their Champions League group opener, nearly finished ahead of moneybags PSG in Ligue 1 last year - but Franck Haise's side ended an agonising one point behind the rich Parisians, boosted by Qatar money. 

However, they've struggled to impress this campaign, and they find themselves in 15th after seven matches.

Franck Haise is still missing Jimmy Chabot who has been out for nearly a year after suffering cruciate ligament injury. Wuilker Farinez and Massadio Haidara are also set to be short for the match

However, midfielder David Pereira da Costa could be set to feature after being out with a shoulder injury.

Talented starlet Elye Wahi grabbed the winner at the weekend in a 1-0 win over Strasbourg - his first goal since his £28m arrival from Montpellier, with the club aiming to replace Lois Openda following his summer move to RB Leipzig

A further £13 million was spent on Andy Diouf from Basel, while young Colombian defender Oscar Cortes arrived from Millonarios, while teenage Uzbekistan international Abdukodir Khusanov was snapped up from Energetik-BGU.

In charge of Lens since 2020, overseeing their recent rise. The former midfielder has also managed Lorient B, Change, and Mayenne after beginning his managerial career in 2003.

Previously managed the Lens' B team after holding caretaker and assistant roles at Lorient. Last season's unexpected title challenge was acknowledged by the 52-year-old being awarded the Ligue 1 Manager of the Year gong.

Marc Overmars netted our first goal in the Champions League (as opposed to the European Cup during the 1-1 draw in France in September 1998. Lens went on to beat us 1-0 at Wembley Stadium in November 1998 as Ray Parlour was sent off in the 90th minute. Both teams finished the group stage on eight points and were eliminated.

Lens so close to winning Ligue 1 title last season: 

A stunning run of 10 wins from their last 11 league games saw Lens end the season as runners-up - a single point behind champions PSG.

While they ended 11 points ahead of a distant Marseille in third, poor mid-season form of one win in seven matches cost them the title. Belgian international striker Lois Openda was the star of the season, as he netted 21 goals in all competitions before signing for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in a £40 million deal.

Lens History

Founded in 1906 by local students and their parents, Lens clinched their first Ligue 2 title in 1937 and have since liftged France’s second tier three more times.

The greatest season in the club's history came in 1998 when they won the Ligue 1 title for the only time in their history - qualifying for the Champions League, where they hosted Arsenal in September 1998, and beat the Gunners at Wembley that November, in what was officially the Gunners highest ever first team attendance.

Lens won the French League Cup in 1998-99, and the following season saw them reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup to record their best European run, before they were eliminated by Arsenal over two legs. 

They continued to be a big presence in the early years of the new millenium, winning the Intertoto Cup in 2005 and 2007, but had struggled afterwards, yo-yoing between the top two tiers for the next 13 years.

They remained in Ligue 2 up to 2020 before their heartening resurgence

Stadium

Opened in 1933, the Stade Bollaert-Delelis has an official capacity of 38,223 - 7,000 more than the local population.

It is based on a traditional British stadium, with four separate stands with the most passionate fans behind both goals.

The stadium has hosted matches in a number of major tournaments, including the 1998 FIFA World Cup where England beat Colombia 2-0, plus the 1984 and 2016 European Championships, where England were again triumphant, this time 2-1 against Wales.

The France national team has played at the stadium eight times, and remained undefeated.
