Bayern Munich Frauen 1-0 Arsenal Women
Allianz Arena
UEFA Women’s Champions League
Lea Schuller’s 39th minute header was enough for Bayern Munich to take a slender lead into next week’s second leg at the Emirates. Arsenal had two efforts cleared off the line in the second half and hit the post, but couldn’t find an equaliser at the Allianz.
Manu Zinsberger 5.5/10
Arsenal announced yesterday that the goalkeeper had signed a contract extension to stay with the club for another year. Pulled off a crucial close-range stop in the closing stages.
Laura Wienroither 5.5/10
Caused a few problems for Bayern going forward. Outjumped by Schuller for her goalscoring header, but it was superb attacking play rather than poor defending.
Leah Williamson 6/10
Returned to central defence after starring in midfield in Arsenal’s past WSL game. Had a shot cleared off the line before Arsenal should have been awarded a very close range freekick for a back pass to the Bayern goalkeeper.
Rafaelle Souza 6/10
Faced the tough test of going up against the talismanic Lea Schuller but generally defended well.
Noelle Maritz 5.5/10
Selected again at left back by Jonas Eidevall after performing well on her opposite flank in the 4-0 win against Reading. Made no attempt to try and close down Rall, who’s cross was a good one for Bayern’s opening goal. Grew into the game more after swapping back to right back when Wienroither was replaced.
Lia Walti 6/10
Battled well in all areas of midfield.
Kim Little 5.5/10
Couldn’t impact the game as much as she would have liked, to Bayern Munich’s credit.
Frida Maanum 5/10
Complemented Blackstenius in attacking midfield. Hit the side netting in the 86th minute with a strong effort- overall her decision making in the final third was lacking.
Katie McCabe 5.5/10
Fired a shot wide in the second half after a good run. Played with her heart on her sleeve as ever, to Arsenal’s benefit, but played a few too many misplaced passes.
Caitlin Foord 8/10
Bayern defenders will be having nightmares about going one on one against Ford at the Emirates after Booked for a rash challenge before curling a shot onto the post moments later in the second half- Arsenal’s brightest spark on the night.
Stina Blackstenius 5/10
Had a good chance from a Foord cross early on but couldn’t direct her header on target. Came very close with another header on the hour mark that was only just cleared off the line by Kumagai.
Victoria Pelova (Sub, 60’) 5/10
Was impactful after coming on, but along with Kuhl Arsenal’s substitutes maybe struggled to hit the ground running from the bench.
Kathrine Kuhl (Sub, 81’)
Subs not used: Sabrina D’Angelo, Kaylan Marckese, Jen Beattie, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Lina Hurtig, Michelle Agyemang.
