Frida Maanum was on the wrong end of an impressive display from FIFA Women’s World Cup hosts New Zealand, who beat Norway by a goal to nil in the opening game of the tournament.
In front of 42,317 fans at Eden Park, New Zealand relished the occasion and their role as underdogs and took the game to Norway from the first minute, with Hannah Wilkinson finishing off a flowing team move three minutes into the second half.
The Football Ferns were then awarded a penalty courtesy of VAR late on, with Ria Percival striking her effort onto the post.
It was a frustrating opening affair for Norway's Frida Maanum, who blasted a close range volley over the crossbar midway through the first half before missing an even better opportunity from the edge of the six yard box in the second.
Despite Norway’s midfield and attack boasting a number of stars, such as Chelsea’s Guro Reiten and Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg, New Zealand were able to restrain Hege Riise’s side and Maanum’s involvement was nullified.
The Arsenal midfielder was replaced with sixteen minutes to go by Manchester United’s Vilde Boe Risa.
Norway next take on Switzerland on Tuesday, with Maanum set to come up against her midfield partner Lia Walti, as well as Noelle Maritz.
