Arsenal will nervously await news for the nature of right-back Emily Fox’s injury after the USA beat Japan in extra time to reach the semi-finals of the Olympics.

Fox suffered a knee injury in the 119th minute of the US’ 1-0 win, and was unable to walk without assistance as she was tearfully substituted.

The defender has started every game of the tournament, with the US winning all three group games before coming out on top against Japan in a tense encounter in Paris.

Arsenal forward Mariona Caldentey and defender Laia Codina both featured for Spain, who came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Colombia before winning on penalties.

Caldentey made her third start of the campaign, and scored Spain’s first penalty, with Codina coming off the bench in the 78th minute.

However, Arsenal’s Cloe Lacasse was on the wrong end of a penalty shootout, losing 4-2 to Germany after a 0-0 draw. Lacasse was introduced in the second half, and did not take a penalty.
