Arsenal defender Emily Fox is guaranteed an Olympic medal after reaching the final of this year’s Games as the USA beat Germany after extra time.

Fox, who had limped off injured in the quarter-final, which was also decided after 120 minutes, kept her place in the US’ backline and was fit enough to play the entire semi-final.

Sophia Smith’s goal in the fifth minute of extra time was the difference as the US reached their sixth Olympic final.

Fox will not face any Arsenal teammates in Saturday’s decider, with a Spain side including both Laia Codina and Mariona Caldentey losing 4-2 to Brazil.

Codina replaced Laia Aleixandri in the heart of Spain’s defence, but her centre-back partner Irene Paredes scored an own goal after six minutes to kick off a night of Spanish errors in Marseille.

Summer signing Caldentey was subdued on the left wing, whilst Codina was replaced by Alexia Putellas in the 77th minute with Spain 3-1 down.

Caldentey and Codina will play Germany on Friday with a bronze medal up for grabs.
