Arsenal’s Caitlin Foord has looked electric throughout the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the Aussie winger scored a crucial goal to give the Matilads the lead against Denmark in the Round of 16.
In the 29th minute, young Manchester City forward Mary Fowler picked the ball up midway inside the Australia half and picked out Foord’s rapid run down the left wing. Foord comfortably outpaced Stine Pedersen and slotted the ball into the corner.
Hayley Raso, now of Real Madrid, scored Australia’s second to knock out Denmark and Kathrine Kuhl. The young Arsenal midfielder has enjoyed an impressive World Cup, serving her well to fight for her place in Jonas Eidevall’s side in the upcoming season.
Foord was named Player of the Match against Denmark, with her Arsenal teammate Steph Catley captaining the Matildas for the fourth consecutive game as Sam Kerr started on the bench.
The Lionesses will take on either Colombia or Jamaica in the quarter finals after beating Nigeria on penalties. Chloe Kelly scored the winning spot-kick following a goalless 120 minutes that saw Chelsea talent Lauren James sent off for stamping on Michelle Alozie’s back late on in normal time.
Arsenal’s summer signing Alessia Russo had impressed with her strength and hold up play upfront in a very difficult encounter for the Lionesses, who looked far from convincing against a Nigeria side naked fortieth in the world.
