1. Katie McCabe never ceases to amaze. The Arsenal star went off injured on Wednesday with what looked like a very concerning injury, and she was keen to give all of the credit to Arsenal’s medical staff after a remarkably quick recovery that saw her start in Sunday’s vital WSL clash. McCabe was up to her usual tricks in the first half, bouncing a throw-in off Chloe Kelly’s head when the City winger tried to stop her taking the throw, and promptly received a yellow card that suspended the Irishwoman from Arsenal’s next League game. McCabe worked hard as ever despite the recent injury, and her goal was just sensational, cutting inside and driving into the box before unfurling a rocket that flew off her left foot and was in the top corner milliseconds later. The celebrations with teammates and coaching staff over by the dugout were just magnificent.
2. Arsenal never know when they are beaten. The Gunners won the Conti Cup final after falling behind to a very early Chelsea goal, overturned a first leg deficit to beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League and yesterday pulled off another comeback to beat title contenders Manchester City. It’s no wonder Jonas Eidevall was “Lost for words” with his team’s character in recent weeks, especially considering some of the injuries that the Gunners have had to deal with- let's not forget that Caitlin Foord went off injured in the first half on Sunday. Could this give the Gunners the edge in what could be the most thrilling WSL title race yet?
3. Sabrina D’Angelo is the real deal. The Canadian goalkeeper made a string of strong saves (forgive the alliteration), all of which seemed to come at crucial times in the game, whether it was denying Hemp from close range late on in the first half or tipping Aleixandri’s shot over the crossbar minutes after Arsenal took a 2-1 lead. D’Angelo has a real presence between the posts and has impressed with her agility and athleticism. Arsenal have two top goalkeepers and Jonas Eidevall can rotate at will, a luxury for a team competing in the WSL title race and going deep in the Champions League as well.
4. Jonas Eidevall’s in-game tactics deserve credit. Things clearly weren’t working out for Arsenal in the first half, so the team talk at half time was absolutely crucial. Arsenal’s press was more aggressive in the second half, the defenders were tighter to their markers and City’s attacking threat dried up. Maritz and Wienroither did their jobs perfectly to suppress the dangerous wingers Kelly and Hemp and keep them out wide, leaving WSL top scorer Khadija Shaw all alone upfront. After the game Eidevall discussed how Arsenal worked on their positioning to “make the space smaller” to stop City playing their football, and the Gunners were able to take control of the game.
