Prologue

Sarina Wiegman's England must show they have what it takes when they play France in their crucial Euro 2025 qualifier.

The Euro title holders have struggled since losing the Women’s World Cup final last summer, with their 2-1 defeat at the hands of France at St James' Park being the fifth time in under a year that the Lionesses have failed to beat a top-ranked side.

Arsenal attacker Beth Mead has admitted that England, as European champions, 'have a target on our back' as they look to breathe life into their Euro 2025 qualifying campaign.

Wiegman's side have been underwhelming during their qualifying campaing so far, having drawn with Sweden, beaten the Republic of Ireland and lost to France, who they play tonight (Tuesday, June 4) for the second time in four days.

The disappointing results mean the Lionesses currently sit third in their group behind France and Sweden if they want to defend their title in Switzerland next summer that they won in such stirring fashion three years ago.

Speaking ahead of the match, Mead said: "You’ve got to beat the best to be the best, and we have a target on our back since winning the Euros."

"But we have enough quality in this team to be able to play against any team and beat them. It’s a tough group and some would say it's the group of death but you have to beat the best to be the best."
