After winning the Conti Cup final this month in such convincing fashion and bringing us our first trophy in four years, reaching the semi-final of the Women’s Champions League win is another huge step in the project, says Claudia Loy. PICTURE: Frida Maanu

Arsenal have reached their first Champions League semi-final in ten years. It’s a moment to behold.

To defeat an in-form Bayern Munich and overturn a one-goal deficit from a tiring first leg in Munich last week, while still being in the midst of what some have called an injury crisis is quite an achievement. Over the two legs, they fully deserved the victory. A 2-1 aggregate scoreline doesn’t really reflect how good we were.

As fans, we are proud that Arsenal women remain the only English team to have won the Champions League, and it was pleasing that they looked like a team who genuinely believed that they can go on and win this competition again.

When Kim Little - who plays such a key part of our ability to control games - went off injured in the 12th minute, the group’s reaction could have been to sit back and try to absorb pressure. But Frida Maanum continued to pull the strings high up in midfield, driving our players forward and forcing the Bayern defence into making difficult decisions.

In a game that could have caused the players to be full of nerves, Arsenal used the energy of the crowd to ease these nerves and played on the front foot. The confidence displayed to dominate in attacking areas and look threatening every time they went forward was outstanding. Caitlin Foord was particularly impressive once again, constantly winning the ball back high up again and creating something for herself.

I also loved the quality on show. In a change from the first leg, Victoria Pelova started on the right with Noelle Maritz at right back, and her link up with Maritz has impressed me in recent weeks.

What’s brilliant about Maritz is that she has used the competition from Wienroither to fight her way back into the team and produce consistent, quality performances in the Champions League. Maanum’s goal in the 19th minute was all about quality too. The backheel from Williamson and the top corner finish from Maanum was beautiful. Goal of the month for me, if not goal of the season so far.

It could be said Arsenal are on the ‘easier’ side of draw for the semi-final (avoiding Barcelona), but any team we face will be high-quality. There will be concern over potential injuries to Katie McCabe and Kim Little, but if we know anything, we know that this team is able to cope.

As fans, we tend to have emotional reactions to injuries, but we know that players are solution-oriented, and this group is more than able to adapt. They have found a way to click without two world class players that any team would miss, which is not an easy feat.

We’ve heard a lot about Mikel Arteta’s project, and he was at the Emirates last night to witness what I think will prove to be an important step in Jonas Eidevall’s project.

After winning the Conti Cup final this month in such convincing fashion and bringing us our first trophy in four years, reaching the semi-final of the Women’s Champions League win is another huge step in the project.

It will also be huge for the confidence of this team. We are now seriously competitive in Europe for the first time in a while, how exciting is that?

And there is still the small matter of a title race.
