Games do not come much closer than that. Pauline Bremer’s 119th minute winner sent Wolfsburg through to the Women’s Champions League final to break the hearts of 60,000 Arsenal fans at a sold-out Emirates Stadium.

Stina Blackstenius gave Arsenal the lead in the eleventh minute as the Gunners dominated the opening exchanges, but Jill Roord’s half volley brought Wolfsburg back into the game before half time. Alex Popp’s header then put the away side on top before Jen Beattie headed home Lotte Wubben-Moy’s cross to force extra time, which Arsenal again dominated, but a lapse in concentration by Wubben-Moy meant that Wolfsburg could create the killer chance that won the semi final.

Hours will be spent looking at where that semi final was won and lost, but for Jonas Eidevall it was all about the small margins.

“I think it’s really really small margins. It has to be a very tight offside on our 2-1 goal, it has to be a very close freekick on that point when we scored, it’s a very close situation on Lina’s opportunity in overtime and of course it hits the crossbar in the second half of overtime so it’s margins, and that's sports”.

“Sometimes you have them with you and you think that all is justified, sometimes they go against you and it feels terrible but i also choose to look at it that way that we as a group accomplished a Champions League semi final and we make it to the tiniest of margin. With all the injuries we have, with all the challenges we have, that is absolutely incredible. I am so proud of the players and the staff that we are able to do that.”

Eidevall believed that Arsenal did all of the right things to try and win the game and play on the front foot. “It’s a good tactical decision that we go chasing for the game already in minute seventy and not waiting until the last five minutes of the game, so we start creating those opportunities and we equalise the game.”

Laura Wienroither left the pitch on a stretcher after a worrying non-contact injury, whilst a quad issue caused Stina Blackstenius to be replaced. “I don’t know the specifics on the medical update,” said Eidevall. “We will have to wait and see, but as you could see probably with Laura on crutches it’s probably worse than it is with Stina".
