Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City, losing 1-0 to Pep Guardiola's side on Friday evening.
In front of ITV cameras and nearly 8,000 vociferous travelling supporters from North London, Nathan Ake's strike was the difference in an absorbing match.
While Guardiola picked a strong side, making only two changes, Arteta selected a more a hybrid starting XI, with six changes from the memorable victory over Manchester United. Matt Turner, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Rob Holding, Kieran Tierney, Fabio Vieira and Leandro Trossard – making his full debut – replaced Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, William Saliba, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli. All six were on the bench, along with Arsenal’s other new signing Jakob Kiwior.
While Arsenal may have established an impressive lead five point lead in the league, it was City who just edged a tight contest thanks to Ake's 64th-minute finish after good work from Jack Grealish.
However, there was little to choose between the sides, with both teams - and neutrals - already anticipating their mouth-watering first clash in the Premier League this season on February 15.
Arsenal had chances of their own, especially in the first half when City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, in for Ederson as one of Guardiola's changes, saved well from Takehiro Tomiyasu and new signing Leandro Trossard.
Speaking after the match Guardiola hailed Ake, calling him an 'exceptional guy' after he sent Manchester City into the FA Cup fifth round.
Arsenal boss Arteta reflected afterwards, saying: “I’m very proud of the boys, they fully deserved the chance to play."
