Captain Katie McCabe scored Ireland’s first ever goal at a World Cup in incredible fashion, bending an inswinging corner into the back of the net with less than five minutes on the clock.
The celebrations for the Girls in Green in Perth were a sight to behold, and it was a moment that McCabe and her nation will never forget.

Canada equalised deep into first half stoppage time courtesy of an own goal from Julia Grosso’s cross, before turning the game around early on in the second half as Adriana Leon poked the ball past Brosnan to make it 2-1, despite the attempted tackle from the recovering McCabe.
One of Arsenal’s new summer signings, Cloé Lacasse, was introduced by Bev Priestman after 59 minutes for another substitute appearance. The 30 year old headed wide with twenty minutes remaining, a difficult diving header that flew past the far post, in what turned out to be a promising cameo.
Defeat for Ireland ended their hopes of reaching the knockout stages at their maiden FIFA Women’s World Cup, after also being defeated by hosts Australia. The Girls in Green play Nigeria on Monday in what will be their final game.
Canada picked up their win of the tournament following a draw with Nigeria, and move to the top of Group B.
Katie McCabe joins Steph Catley and Amanda Ilestedt on the list of Arsenal players to score in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
