Arsenal’s Spanish summer signing Mariona Caldentey helped her country complete a perfect group stage campaign at the 2024 Olympics.
Caldentey came off the bench at the start of the second half, and set up Alexia Putellas’ late goal as Spain beat Nigeria 2-0 to finish top of Group C with three wins.
Emily Fox also sealed qualification for the quarter-finals, with her USA side beating Australia 2-1 in Marseille. Right-back Fox was replaced after 65 minutes having started every group game.
All three of Arsenal’s Matildas started for the third game in a row in a disappointing group stage for Australia. Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord played the full 90 against the US but Kyra Cooney-Cross was substituted at half-time.
Canada winger Cloe Lacasse was also withdrawn at the interval as her side went on to beat Colombia 1-0 to seal a remarkable quarter-final qualification, despite being docked six points earlier in the tournament.
Canada’s win prevented Australia from progressing to the knockout stages as one of the two best third-placed sides, with Arsenal’s Aussie trio’s Olympic hopes ended.
