Denmark is a country that are not short of talent from the likes of Niklas Bendnter, Katrine Veje and John Jensen to name a few but when the Gunners sprang for central midfielder Kathrine Moller Kuhl in January 2023 not many knew what toexpect.

A former manager has previously said that Kuhl has the potential higher thanthat of Pernille Harder. So how has the Dane faired on her journey since signing? There are a few factors that are to be taken into account.

Double pivot

The double pivot is a huge part of how the team operates both with and without the ball. The two players that have held the fort in these roles for the past three seasons pending any injuries are captain Kim Little and a fan favourite Lia Walti.

Both bringing balance to the side in terms of defensive work and offensive output, where Little can draw in opposition and have the ability to get away from markers through her technical ability as well as offer to be a nuisance to opposition when regaining the ball.

Walti offers something different; her two footed approach can help spreadthe play while also being considered the more defensive of the pair this is backed with Lia only scoring three goals for the club since joining in July 2018 from Turbine Potsdam in Germany.

With the two players it has become hard to point to who can help in those roles when both are potentially unavailable Victoria Pelova has stepped up into that role and Frida Maanum has been used there previously but it can be argued that she works better in the attacking midfielder role as she did in 22/23 and played a vital part in theseason that got the Gunners to a Champions League semi-final and winning the Conti Cup.

Last summer saw Kyra Cooney-Cross come in on deadline day and managed a total of 14 WSL games last season. It could be considered that with how the squad was too big last season someone had to be moved on, it was decided that Kuhl would do so at Everton in January, managing a total of ten appearances for the Toffees in the WSL often appearing as part of the central midfield pivot.

The experience and exposure helped Kuhl develop as a player and could possibly see what the future holds for the number 22 during the US tour- taking on Washington Spirit and Chelsea before a trip back to St. Mary's Stadium to take on Southampton, the venue of Arsenal’s 2-1 victory in the Conti Cup group stage games last season.

With whatever comes, hopefully Kuhl will be one to watch out for the upcoming season.
