Opinion: Is Emile Smith Rowe’s short term future best served away from Arsenal?

Arsenal have plenty of strong players in their squad for the 2023/24 season, and with Gabriel Jesus nearing a timely return to action from injury, it’ll only strengthen Mikel Arteta’s strength in depth. However, some might argue that further signings are needed before the summer transfer window reaches a conclusion, which could push certain players even further down the pecking order in the first-team squad. 

One of those that could potentially struggle for regular game time in the Arsenal squad is Emile Smith Rowe, who has found regular minutes hard to come by in the last couple of seasons, which is likely to be frustrating for the young midfielder. He’s been with Arsenal since 2010, and broke into the first-team picture on a consistent basis during both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 season. The 2021/22 season is where Smith Rowe caught the eye for all the right reasons, as he was on hand to score 11 goals, and provide two assists for his Arsenal team-mates. 

However, the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and now Kai Havertz have kept him out of the starting XI in recent months, and you have to question whether Smith Rowe’s development is best served with Arsenal this season, especially with Arteta having stronger options in his squad at this moment in time. Of course, Arteta will rotate his squad at times to manage the busy schedule they have with Champions League matches coming up, but you have to feel as though Smith Rowe is a player that should be playing every single week on a regular basis if he’s to further his development in senior football. 

Injuries have hampered some of that development in recent years, and so it could be beneficial for him to seek a loan move away from the Emirates Stadium before the transfer window closes. We’ve already seen him flourish in a loan spell with Huddersfield Town back in the 2019/20 season whilst the Terriers were playing their football in the Championship.
