Personal mishaps and apologies are insufficient to dropped points in Arsenal's title hopes

My opinion on Arsenal's dropped points due to errors in officiating after two points lost against Brentford

It’s a new week, and a crucial week for Arsenal with the gap at the top narrowed down to three points.

Second place Manchester City are next in a game that could play a huge factor in the outcome of the Premier League season.

The match comes with more pressure than we were hoping for, especially after dropping five painful points in our last two games.

Everton away was poor, but easily forgotten as Manchester City also dropped points that weekend, the Brentford draw felt worse despite only leaving two points behind.

It wasn’t City’s rampant display against Aston Villa that was sore, it was the fact our victory was denied due to ‘human error’ when it came to a video assistant used to reduce the risk of human error in football.

Ranting about officiating when your team has failed to win isn’t a trait anyone wants to be labelled with, but the standard of refereeing in arguably the best league in the world is dire.

Over last weekend alone, PGMOL had to apologise for two instances of human error which led to both Brighton and Arsenal dropping valuable points.

An apology doesn’t cover anything, if anything it’s more alarming.

VAR was introduced to banish controversial decisions and provide cutting-edge technology to assist referees who may miss things in real time.

So what use is VAR if the people operating it aren’t capable of drawing lines to determine whether a goal is called to be offside?

The answer is no use.

It’s not just Arsenal, but we can’t ignore the fact that this is the fourth result influencing error made against the Gunners this season.

Gabriel Martinelli’s goal being disallowed at Old Trafford where we went on to drop three points, a missed penalty on Gabriel Jesus against Southampton which ended in a draw, no consideration for a penalty with an obvious shirt pull in the draw against Newcastle United, and now this.

That’s nine points potentially lost from the mishaps of VAR and quality of officiating in the Premier League.

If Arsenal aren’t good enough on the day and don’t win that’s fine, it’s one of those things.

To have points snatched in such a way after grinding in a toe-to-toe match to open the scoring is painful.

With all the money the Premier League receives, the quality of football we are blessed with, and the history of the clubs involved, you’d assume only the best referees would be appointed to oversee such quality.

Maybe that’s just too much to ask.

Redemption is on for Arsenal in a game that needs little build up, with the leagues top two going head to head on Wednesday night at the Emirates.
