Sevilla vs Arsenal Preview

Preamble:

The Gunners trained in good spirits at London Colney on Monday morning ahead of travelling to Andalusia for their Champions League clash with Sevilla, at the 42,714 capacity Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Tuesday evening. 

It’s been a mixed bag of results since the Gunners eagerly-awaited return to the top table of European football after a six year wait.

Mikel Arteta’s side kicked-off their Euro campaign with an imperious 4-0 thrashing of PSV at a sodden Emirates on Matchday One. Prior to throwing away a one goal lead at a passionate Stade Bollaert last time out. When Gabriel Jesus’ opener was cancelled out by Adrien Thomasson, who capitalised on poor distribution by David Raya, before to the lively young prodigy Elye Wahi grabbed the winner, during a frenzied evening in northern France earlier this month.

Seville, for their part sit in third place, directly below Arsenal after two draws in their opening matches.

Sevilla vs Arsenal is scheduled for an 8pm BST kick-off time on Tuesday October 24, 2023. 

The Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium in Seville will host.

Could Aaron Ramsdale make a welcome return to the Gunners starting line-up? The popualr keeper missed the breathless 2-2 draw at Chelsea on Saturday after his wife giving birth to a baby boy. However the former Sheffield United netminder is in contention to start, following another ineffective performance by David Raya at the weekend. 

Thomas Partey is set to return to the starting X, with his replacement at the Bridge, former Chelsea midfield Jorginho set to miss out. While Leandro Trossard, Fabio Vieira and Takehiro Tomiyasu have all impressed recently, giving boss Arteta with the best kind of selection headache.

Jurrien Timber remains the only long-term injury absentee.

Former Spurs attacker Erik Lamela is available for Sevilla once again after a muscle injury, but Marcao and Mariano Diaz are set to miss out.

Loic Bade started the 1-1 draw with Real Madrid from the bench, but should partner Sergio Ramos in defence.

Former Real Madrid star defender Sergio Ramos is expected to captain the side again after his summer return to the club from the Bernabeu, with Jesus Navas and Marcos Acuna aiming to shut down Arsenal's threat from the wings.

Orjan Nyland appears to hold the No1 spot for the side from Andalusia.

Sevilla form: 

Sevilla's only win in their last seven came at home against Almeria. The Spanish side have only won two competitive matches during this campaign so, however, they are unbeaten in five home games.

This fixture's only previous competitive meetings came in the group stages of the 2007-08 Champions League. Arsenal posted a comfortable 3-0 home victory through goals from Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Eduardo, prior falling to a 3-1 defeat in Spain having taken an early lead.

In a pre-season friendly last August the Gunners routed Sevilla 6-0 in the Emirates Cup when Gabriel Jesus grabbed a hat-trick, Bukayo Saka netted twice and Eddie Nketiah completed the rout. Albeit against a side that had just returned to pre-season training. 

Manager Diego Alonso

Seville’s head coach is Uruguayan Diego Alonso, who joined Seville after managing his country. The boss is the fourth incumbent in the last 12 months. 

Alonso was named Inter Miami's first ever head coach in 2019, and helped steer Urugauy into the 2022 World Cup, but resigned after a group stage exit.

Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium

Sevilla's home ground is the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, named after their former president and where they have played since 1958. It has a capacity of 42,714, making it the ninth-largest stadium in Spain.

As you can see from our photograph it was the venue for the 2022 Europa League final where Eintracht Frankfurt defeated Rangers on penalties.

The stadium also hosted games during the 1982 World Cup including the infamous Germany v France semi-final, as well as the 1986 European Cup final which saw Steaua Bucharest beat Barcelona.
