Football is a brilliant thing when it’s simmered down to simply players kicking around a ball for the entertainment of millions.
In present day, it can also be quite a sinister thing.
With more money pumped into the game comes more power, and with power comes corruption and we lose a small sense of what is the beautiful game.
Manchester City have been the subject of the news this week in a scandalous affair with the Premier League over the club reportedly not co-operating with an investigation over financial rules.
The league announced at the start of this week that they had charged City with over 100 breaches of such financial rules dating from 2009 to 2018.
It’s believed that City have – as put by football finance expert Kieran Maguire when telling the BBC - ‘artificially inflated money coming into the club with respect to sponsorship deals’ and ‘artificially deflated costs of running the club by having managers on contracts with another company so only a small element of the cost comes through the club books.’
It’s all a bit odd isn’t it, and quite simply it’s unnecessary and it’s cheating.
So, what does this have to do with Arsenal?
There’s been talks that a possible punishment for City – if found guilty of at least half the charges – would be a points deduction.
I’ve seen a lot of talk of Arsenal ‘getting lucky’ this season, which doesn’t sit right with me whatsoever.
It’s a football league, if the team chasing Arsenal slip up, that’s on them to not perform and it shouldn’t under any circumstance boil down to assisting Arsenal who sit at the top.
When the news broke of City’s possible punishments, the reaction was very much along the lines of; would a points deduction for the side in second place taint Arsenal’s season should they go on the win the Premier League title?
Let’s not forget that Arsenal have been top of the league since August.
The Gunners have been the best team in the country this season for a reason, we’ve lost two and drawn two all season and surpassed most tests put in front of us.
The loss against Everton last weekend was tough to take, I think we were all shocked to see Arsenal not playing well, which in itself shows how the standard and expectation has elevated this season.
If a points deduction is the punishment for City, it means nothing to Arsenal.
If Arsenal continue how they’ve been going and win the title, that’s because they’re the best team in the Premier League this season – not because City are incapable of declaring their financial mishaps.
The talk stems mostly from the fans of rival clubs, I feel a sense of envy and resentment which resonates just how well Arsenal are doing, I personally love that.
So, for us it’s, remain consistent, keep the momentum going and drive on for the second half of the season.
