Here's the brilliant Alan Alger and his latest Three Things We Learned column for the Gooner Fanzine
Glasses half full and plenty of chances to top them up…
We won 6-0 at a London rival in the top half of the table on Sunday and yet I still think we had gears to find above that performance.
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a moan. In fact it’s a positive rallying cry that, if anything, West Ham were lucky we just hit six.
I’ve seen Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Kai Havertz all perform much better than they did at the London Stadium at the weekend.
His superb goal aside Trossard had another poor starting appearance in my view.
Havertz had a specific job to fulfill and did it well, but he could have bagged himself a goal (or two).
Martinelli might have been questioning that six goals scored and his name not getting on the scoring or assist sheet was a failure on his part.
I want that hunger, I want that desire. I think the boss does too.
Note our quick distribution from the keeper even as we were 6-0 up, with our technical area screaming for bodies to get forward. I’m filled with positivity that we can be even more ruthless.
Raya coming into his own, Ramsdale the model pro…
It now seems without debate that David Raya is firmly cemented as our number one.
His performances since the winter break have been solid and commanding. His quality of distribution vital.
Maybe it wasn’t even much of a debate in Mikel Arteta’s head. Maybe he was confident all along. He’s paid to make the tough decisions and he keeps getting them more right than wrong - to a huge degree.
In fact I can only think of the Thomas Partey right back experiment and Trossard corners as questionable perseverances.
The boss isn’t afraid to upset the status quo and keep the players on their toes. Let’s not forget that he came into a squad full of egos and lack of respect. He’s earned ours and restored theirs.
It’s therefore likely that last season’s first choice keeper, and fan favourite, Aaron Ramsdale will make a final farewell Emirates appearance for us against Brentford in early March.
Ramsdale has been the epitome of professionalism in dealing with the personal and career setback of being ousted by Raya.
Getting his head down and being supportive of the team, every Gooner can feel immense pride of his use of spare time to gain his coaching badges and help the youngsters at Hale End.
Not only that, he’s been a cheerleader from the bench in vital games and it’s hinted he was even the one putting a word in Arteta’s ear on Sunday to ‘get Ethan on’.
Whatever happens I feel that whether it’s in an Arsenal shirt or one of our opposition he will be fondly welcomed by our fans for many years to come.
Burnley aren’t the cloggers they used to be and that’s going to suit us…
Saturday’s fixture away at Burnley is one that often filled fans with dread.
Despite a good record there we knew we were going to be in for a battle.
Under Vincent Kompany they try to play football and, as we saw from their Emirates trip, they won’t be as good at that as our boys.
They’re firmly in a relegation battle so they won’t be giving up the points easily.
They arguably had one of their best halves of the season at Anfield in the first 45 at the weekend.
We can’t take them lightly but we don’t have a supremely physical battle to fear.
Let’s get the ball down and play around them and get on top and be as clinical as on Sunday.
We can also maintain a 100% record at home and away against the current bottom seven of the table.
