Three things we learned from Arsenal Women’s 3-0 win over Leicester City at The Emirates as trip to Everton looms. By Claudia Loy
We’re starting to get some players back with minutes
Maanum, Wienroither, and Miedema all came on to great applause from the crowd, and although it’s a shame that we didn’t have the latter two available for more of the season, this bodes well for the rest of the season. Especially with a few players either tired or out with injury, hopefully they will all continue to get minutes. By the way I hope that next season we’re able to give Kyra more minutes because she’s a great player. We’re stacked in midfield unfortunately so I completely understand it, but it’s a shame for her. It was great to see Maanum back after what happened in the Conti Cup final, and great that Viv got another great reception from the Emirates crowd too.
We’re finding our way through low blocks
As in the Villa away game, the first half was fine. We did create some chances, but not quite clear-cut chances apart from the goal. In the second half, we really opened them up. We pressed so well and won the ball high, then moved it quickly, creating some goal scoring opportunities. We look slightly more determined now. I think Leah Williamson is helping this with her vision and long balls, as is Emily Fox with her overlapping runs. By the way, great finish from Alessia Russo for the second goal!
We’re getting great attendances at The Emirates
42,000 fans were there, which is great! Considering the season is basically over competitively and Leicester are mid table, that’s a really good number. It was nice to see the kids there learning the chants and commenting on their favourite players. When Emily Fox got POTM (should be basically every match IMO!!) the boy behind me said ‘yeah she’s been really good to be fair!’ That kid is going places. The players love playing at The Emirates, and I think these attendances really help their performances too. So keep it up Gooners, and hopefully we’ll see more of this next season!
