Arsenal Women have sold over 36,000 tickets for the second leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League semi final against Wolfsburg.
The entire of the upper tier at Emirates Stadium has been opened up, with very few tickets left in the lower tier at the time of writing. Arsenal sold 21,307 tickets for their quarter final second leg win over Bayern Munich, which was a record attendance for a European game hosted by the club.
The highest ever Women’s Super League crowd, of over 47,000, were in attendance for Arsenal’s North London Derby win over Tottenham in September, and the Emirates has played host to large crowds for WSL meetings with Manchester United and Chelsea too.
Increasing attendance numbers this season have been something to behold. Average crowds in the WSL have been up by two hundred percent since last summer’s Euro 2022 triumph for the Lionesses, with attendances in the Women’s Championship also improving by eighty-five percent.
It’s no wonder that talk of a permanent move to the Emirates has already been openly discussed by Arsenal FC CEO Vinai Venkatesham this season. Jonas Eidevall mentioned after the Bayern Munich victory that many people see a move to the Emirates as “realistic for the future”, and Vivianne Miedema predicted a permanent move there when she spoke at half time of Arsenal’s last WSL game, the 2-1 win over Manchester City.
With the date for the Wolfsburg game being early evening on a May Bank Holiday, the stage is set perfectly for ticket sales to continue on an upward trajectory. Whatever happens in the first leg, Arsenal fans will have a massive part to play in their side’s quest to reach just their second European final.
Wolfsburg confirmed last week that they have sold upwards of 10,000 tickets for the first leg in Germany. The ‘She-Wolves’ had 11,293 fans in attendance for their Champions League win over Arsenal last year.
Last season’s quarter final first leg against Wolfsburg was watched by 5,018 at the Emirates, so Arsenal deserve so much credit for their work this season to continue to take crowd numbers to new levels. The club put tickets on sale immediately after the comeback victory over Bayern, with 8,000 sold within 24 hours of the full time whistle, and an ‘early bird’ period offered discounted tickets.
