Wenger: Trying to prove a point at the expense of trophies

Tuesday night's disaster against United was the reality check that has been coming all season, which has been dodged mostly by fortune but smacked Wenger full in the face last night. The brutal reality is that you have to look at the two squads and United's was far superior to ours.

Our squad is made of players who think they're better than they are having been told that by Wenger. Did he really say at the start of the season that this was his best squad ever? This lot aren't fit to lace the boots of the great side of 2004. The truth is that we were lucky to still be in the tie going into the second leg and perhaps what should have happened at Old Truffle occurred in north London. We were lucky last week, but that luck ran out inside ten minutes. Yes we can blame Gibbs for slipping over or Almunia for letting that Portuguese p***k score that free kick but to do so would be to miss the point. United were much better in all departments and that's what hurts the most.

Wenger has had his head in the sand all season long and last night the chickens came home to roost. This cannot go on for any longer. He is in very serious danger of destroying all the good work he's done for us over the past thirteen years.

I read somewhere that he did a similar thing at Monaco. Got rid of all his experienced players and replaced them with young French and African players. Sound familiar? And he ended up getting sacked. I'm not suggesting the board would do that but how much longer can this go on?

How much longer can the board justify the ludicrous amounts they charge us to watch potential. What sticks in the craw is that the board knew we'd have to sacrifice expensive players for a few years yet they decided to hoodwink us and that's just wrong. The board say there's money to spend but Wenger seems convinced that he hasn't so somebody is telling porkies.

Something drastic must change in the summer. Wenger needs to break the habit of a lifetime and go and spend decent money on quality players because otherwise this will be the same story for however long he remains here. His faith in the young players is admirable but on Tuesday night was just shocking.

What's concerned me the most this season is that the more criticism aimed at the squad, the more he has dug his heels in. Take the FA Cup semi-final, a great chance to get to a final and he leaves his best player on the bench in Arshavin? Why? What idiot would do that?

It seems he's more determined to prove his squad is great at the expense of winning trophies. He did an interview recently where he explained that signing Barry or Alonso would have "killed Denilson, Song and Diaby". Instead he killed our chances of winning anything and that sums it all up.
