Even Stephen King could not conjure up a more terrifying story

Almunia: Not a trophy-winning keeper

I can’t fault the lads’ display for the first ten minutes, until an unlucky slip from Gibbs for their first goal and a dubious decision from the ref to award a free-kick ended the game early. I’ve been watching the Arsenal for 20 years now and experienced the highs and lows that comes with it (it may sound weird but I still think if we went 1-0 up, the game would have been oh so different) but I just can’t believe how we gave up so easily.

Even if we were already out, at least try to come back and draw on the night and salvage some pride at least. The way United played reminded me of how we used to play once upon a time. We used to break with that pace and power and finish the game after 20 minutes.

Back then we had true grit on the pitch. Now, it seems that the only thing this bunch care about is the pay packet. I hate to say it, but a defeat like this was on the cards. It was a case of "this is how you should play if you want to be successful". There is clearly no hunger/desire to win. Kolo Toure isn’t the same player he once was, Johan Djourou looked rusty and kept on getting skinned by Ronaldo and Cesc was non-existent again.

What makes matters worse is that we now have Chavski at home on Sunday and then another trip to Old Trafford, even Stephen King could not conjure up a more terrifying story. If we keep playing like this with these players then more hidings will follow against the big teams. It’s now a question of damage limitation in our remaining games. We are so lucky that we’ve got fourth place but even that doesn’t mean it’s easy as now you can get a team from a La Liga or Serie A amongst others in qualifying for the Champions League group stage.

It’s time for the club to go to the learning tree in the summer. If last night’s game hasn’t proved Wenger wrong then God knows what will. We the fans who pay the money know what needs to be done. In my eyes, Wenger has four years of making up to do. He owes us big time. Time to dust off that chequebook and do some serious dealing in the summer. If you get rid of Adebayor, that’s £30 million already. With that you could get a 25-30 goal a season striker or two decent defensive midfielders.

We’ve got enough creativity, it’s just the defence that needs strengthening and we need a goalie who is commanding and isn’t afraid to take risks because I’m sorry but Almunia or Fabianski are not trophy winning keepers like Seaman and Lehmann. At the E******s, there is a banner saying "In Arsene We Trust". How much longer though remains to be seen.
