Good business by the manager in ANC season?

Wenger's clever sales bring in huge fees

Kolo: Not the force he was

With Kolo now on his way to City for £15m we will have brought in £40m in a week. There are also rumours abound that Eboue will join Fiorentina for around £8m, leaving us devoid of Ivorians and short on Africans.

This, I reckon is no coincidence. In January the African Nations Cup will be played and no doubt the three we've sold will be involved. Kolo and Eboue's Ivory Coast are a strong team and often get to the final, meaning they would be gone until late February and last time it took Kolo ages to fit back in, if he ever did.

So, Wenger sees selling them as losing them for only say half of this season as they would be gone for around half anyway. The second reason I see the boss as being very wise this summer is this; last season we lost Gilberto, Hleb and Flamini, all key players and we brought in say £10m. We the fans were not happy as we didn't replace them and voiced this throughout the season.

However this year is different. Many, myself not included, berated phone-ins demanding Adebayor and Eboue be sold for poor attitudes and general poor performances while many other fans came to realise in games like Liverpool away that Kolo was not the force of 2003-04 and the past. In fact, he asked for a transfer in January but was told to wait while Ade obviously caused trouble last year.

So, from Wenger's point of view, in conducting the summer sales that it seems he requires to be able to buy, he is selling two players the fans wanted to go and one who most won't mind too much while bringing in the most money in one season I can remember. Very clever if you ask me.
