Right, file under blatant self-publicity, but what is the point in overseeing this very website if I can’t, occasionally, use it to promote something that will help pay the bills. And there’s something in it for you too (£1 off the already reduced online price).
A year ago, the hardback version of ‘Arsènal, the Making of a Modern Superclub’ was released, written by Alex Fynn and my good self. Not to be confused with ‘Arsenio’s: The Making of a Modena Supper Club’ - a totally different work about an eaterie in north central Italy. Anyhow, the one about the football team in north London sold out around Christmas time, so for those that missed out, or indeed those who are willing to shell out for an extra four new chapters, we’ve a special offer for onlinegooner readers who wish to buy the book on the net.
The deal is this. The publishers’ online price is £5.99. If you visit this page and select ‘buy now’, on the next page you get the opportunity to enter a promo code. Enter the word ‘gooner’ here and the amount is recalculated to £4.99. So, a £1 saving. Postage and packing will be added before you complete your order.
The four new chapters cover the story of the last 12 months at Arsenal, including the potentially significant machinations at boardroom level, with Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith’s departure explained, along with input from three of the current board, as well as David Dein. A notorious exchange from the shareholders Q&A with Arsène Wenger which was edited out of the Arsenal TV broadcast of the event is also relayed in full. And there’s an analysis of how last season’s performances on the field fell so far short of 2007/08. Although not sensationalist in tone, few punches are pulled. So if you missed out on the hardback, now is your chance to catch up and if you bought it anyway, for a fiver, you have the opportunity to read more.
The reviews of the hardback edition are carried on the publishers’ website, (scroll down on this page) and I have to say it was rewarding to get such positive feedback.
For those who want to buy it in a more traditional way, it’s available in all good bookstores, and if you are coming to a weekend home game, it will be available from the fanzine and memorabilia stall outside 170 Drayton Park, (probably for £5.99).
