After travelling to Holland to see the washout that was last Tuesday’s game, I can honestly say, the highlight of my day occurred after the final whistle. Whilst the travelling faithful watched a match that didn’t really have much to it, sang our hearts out for the full 93 minutes, and stood in the freezing cold of Alkmaar, our superstar 11 decided not to come over to us when the final whistle blew. Sure a couple of them clapped from the edge of the box and gave us a wave, but what would have really made it all worth it was a real bit of appreciation from the lads.
The only player to come over, give us a real wave and throw in his shirt was Emmanuel Eboue. I have noticed the massive difference in how the away fans react towards Eboue compared to the home fans. He is almost the firm favourite with the away fans, with many of us proudly sporting his name on the backs of our shirts, whereas with the home crowd the jury seems to be out on his talent.
Whilst I am not naïve enough to say he is the best winger in the land, I do think he has come on in leaps and bounds this season. He always gets ten for effort in my book and can really be a threat on goal. He is also one of our better crossers of the ball. I cannot count the amount of times this season I have seen him put the ball perfectly in the middle from a wide position, but there is just nobody there to finish it off. He is also more than adequate cover for right back, something we certainly need if anything were to happen to Sagna.
I have read that some clubs are looking to make a move for him in the January window. I really hope there is no truth in this, as I would be gutted were he to go elsewhere. He offers such a different outlet to everyone else in the squad, and is always improving. Whilst we know he has had his bad moments and that a small amount of fair weather Gooners won’t warm to him, it is evident that his disappointing period is behind him, and he is becoming a real Arsenal player. Wenger’s new system appears to bring the best out of him, and I hope that there is more to come.
