A few things came out of the West Ham game. Firstly, you should never ever fail through lack of effort. Why should players feel the need to coast their way through the second half? Are they not being paid enough?
Secondly, has Wenger actually decided who his first choice goalkeeper is? I'm all for giving young players a chance, and Mannone has done well, but is the manager actually saying that here is a goalkeeper who is going to help win us a championship? If the answer is no, or I'm not sure, then surely he shouldn't be picked unless absolutely necessary. The teams that win titles invariably have top drawer keepers. Robert Green plays for West Ham for Christ's sake! Hands up if you weren't just a little bit envious when he pulled off that last minute save? I'm sorry Vito, by all means learn the job, but you may have to do that somewhere else. Nothing personal.
Next up, Emmanuel Eboue. Most of us have been quite impressed with him this season. His head seems to be in the same vicinity as the rest of him, which is half the battle. He's got skill and is undoubtedly athletic, but playing virtually up front on the right? His big weakness is an inability to deliver anything resembling end product. It's a shame, because if he could, he would be a very good player, but if you're looking for someone to hammer(sic) inferior opposition, I just can't see him posing a real threat. When exactly are we going to give Wilshere his chance? He would have been tailor made for that match.
Tactics. It was quite obvious after the first half, that the young lad who was playing alongside Upson at the back for West Ham was completely out of his depth. Why on earth wasn't he totally and utterly punished? We're simply not ruthless enough. I'd have got Bendtner on as soon as possible and told him to go and stand next to him and make the boy mark him. Other teams ruthlessly exploit our weaknesses, why don't we do the same? If we're not prepared to win at all costs, it probably means we aren't going to win at all.
Diaby? Another talented man, but where do you play him? He doesn't defend, so that limits you. Wenger likes to put him on the left of a three man midfield, and I suppose to be fair he's missing Rosicky and Nasri, but I've got this feeling he's going to persevere with him even when the other two get fit. The problem is he makes the midfield unbalanced. What we're really crying out for is somebody there with a left foot, who can change the direction of attack. Clichy can't cross the ball to save his life, and Arshavin prefers to cut inside. Is Merida worth a run?
Everybody's got their own opinion, but what isn't disputable is the fact that we've literally thrown away yet another game. The manager says that as a team they are learning, but after last night, can you honestly say you agree with him?
