The Wonder of "Why this bloody song?”

The club’s newly adopted ‘anthem’ has not proved universally popular

The Wonder of

Elvis: Always on our minds… at 2.55pm on Saturdays?

Liam Ridgewell's effort at putting Theo Walcott out of the recent match v Birmingham made many of us shudder and think back to losing Eduardo to a horror tackle. If that was not enough, the scummy Brummies piped up with a chorus extolling the virtues of Martin Taylor, which has rightly attracted condemnation from both clubs. I doubt Taylor wants to be reminded about it anyway.

All the above did at least take my mind off what an awful theme tune "The Wonder of You" is for the Arsenal. Besides already being used by Port Vale, it's completely turgid and about as upbeat as a Sam Alladyce press conference. How are we supposed to get the Arsenal Stadium rocking when the team has to run out to something that bad?

There is loads of sterling work on both these online pages and elsewhere connected with getting the new stadium "Arsenalisation" and Ivan Gazidis seems to be taking all of this on board (can we have a proper goalkeeper, midfield destroyer and 30 goal per season striker as well please Ivan) which is excellent. Other Gooners have commented on this but can we please have a find the Arsenal anthem campaign in The Gooner and a vote to find the winning song?

(Ed’s note – we actually did this in the summer of 2007 and ‘The Impossible Dream’ was the most popular choice. There is a thread about it on the onlinegooner forum, although how far back you’d have to delve I just couldn’t say. However, from mass of suggestions, one was ‘The Wonder Of You’ (by Donaldo, one our our regular posters) which I think was the reason it was originally considered by the club, as they drew up a shortlist of options for an anthem which included suggestions from the thread. I attended a meeting at the club in which they told myself and some of the REDaction people what they were planning to do and the reasons why and I left it thinking, fair enough. This is the reason I have never been critical of the idea.)

I'd go for "London Calling" by the Clash because Arsenal are the number one club in our capital city and it sounds great through the stadium's sound system in years gone by but I'm sure there could be better songs out there. Let's have some suggestions please.

(Ed’s note – I’ve started a thread here for any responses to this, even if it’s well worn territory for some of our more regular posters. You have to register to post on the forum, although it costs nothing and is a fairly brief process.
