Not good enough. And Arsene knows it

Wenger: Deluding himself?

I listened to the commentary on yesterday’s match in the car; I never had the feeling that we were even close to scoring.

Arsene knows all right – he knows his team is too weak (physically and mentally) to beat Chelsea. Where was the big game from Arshavin? Will Eduardo ever recover properly? Will Nasri or Rosicky ever turn a big game?

But does he have the guts to admit it and change tack? Not a chance. We are fighting for 3rd place, which would of course be an improvement on last year. We will probably lose on Wednesday (which will actually be a blessing, saving two more matches, and the potential for more injuries, in January). I can’t see us getting past the last eight in the Champions League, if that.

Four defeats by the end of November. Champions? Not a chance now, if there ever was one.

Someone asked me why Arsenal keep conceding goals and lost yesterday.

My response…

The principal reason Arsenal keep conceding so many goals is that the defenders do not concentrate every minute of every game.

Secondly, the full backs do not prevent crosses coming in which other defences prevent.

Thirdly, because the team is, overall, much smaller than most teams in the Premier League, skill and speed only get you so far; playing Chelsea at the present time is like 13 year olds playing 16 year olds; even if the 13 year olds are quicker and more skilful, the bigger 16 year olds will, more often than not, overpower the younger kids. It happened in the Carling Cup final in Cardiff, it happened at Wembley last April and it has happened in the last two league games. And remember in Cardiff, we had Toure, Eboue, Adebayor, Baptista and Diaby on the pitch, all pretty much bigger players than those in their places yesterday.

And fourthly, until either Drogba retires or Arsenal sign a beast of a centre back (eg a young Sol Campbell type), Drogba will always have the beating of the defenders Arsenal have; our defenders are not big enough, nor strong enough (mentally as well as physically) to deal with him. We have seen it before, it was apparent yesterday and it will happen again.

Finally, Arsene Wenger is deluding himself if he really thinks Arsenal are in a strong position and are still fighting for the Premiership. And as for his comment that Drogba doesn’t do much – no comment!
