(I was halfway through writing this when I saw the latest online editorial – not much to disagree with there but Denilson was my most improved player last year)
Sunday at a very soggy Arsenal Stadium saw yet another depressingly lightweight Arsenal side brushed aside by gargantuan title rivals. I’m not going to climb into Le Boss but I’m still not seeing any midfield powerhouses or six foot plus target men progressing through the reserves and as we could all see for ourselves yesterday, Arsenal are desperately short of players who can physically seize control of key areas of the pitch.
Much as I have marvelled at Vermaelen all season, it was something of a reality check to see him and our other ‘hardman’ Song muscled off the ball by Drogba and as wiser heads than mine have already counselled, the likes of Vela and Eduardo were always going to be too lightweight to lead the front line against any half decent centre back pairing. RVP had started to show some promise in this role before the inevitable injury intervened but where is the back up for him?
Off on a bit of a tangent here but I hope there is merry hell being raised behind the scenes in the Arsenal Treatment Room concerning the diagnosis of RVP’s injury and the aborted rehab shambles. To have Arsenal’s prospects of success hang on the health and fitness of one make-do centre forward is a damning indictment of the lack of talent available to Le Boss. Where the blame for this rests, I’ll happily leave to the editor and fellow bloggers.
It really hurts this morning seeing the Spuds ahead of us in the League table and waking up again to Arsenal falling well short of being capable of even challenging, let alone able to beat the likes of Chavski, Merchandise Utd and Citeh. Anyway, here’s to turning over Citeh in the Carling Cup and putting Sparky Hughes out of work.
