Wenger’s turkeys come home to roost a month early!

Gung ho… no silver lining

Before kick off on Sunday I knew what was about to unfold before my eyes. Sometimes you just get these feelings, and I knew we were in for a hiding. So why didn't Wenger? How much longer will he deny the obvious?

Some of his post-match comments were frankly embarrassing, to himself, and Arsenal FC as a whole. Once again Didier Drogba tore our shaky defence to shreds and what does Arsene say? "Drogba didn't do much apart from the goals". Is he missing the point? That’s his job. Score twice with two chances. End of. "Chelsea were lucky" was another comment, No Arsene, we were predictable, gutless, clueless, and outclassed by a team who must love playing Arsenal more than anyone else at present. Why? Because we just refuse to play tight. We are so gung ho and refuse to sit back for periods and encourage a tight defence to step out a little. Chelsea just employed a simple 4-4 formation in front of goal and then picked us off at ease. So easy, so simple.

So why can't Wenger see this? We never used to play like this against the big boys under Wenger. Many victories over United, Liverpool and Europe’s elite were gained by digging in and soaking up our fair share of pressure, and then catching teams on the break. How many times did Henry, Pires, Wiltord, Vieira, Wright, Anelka, Overmars and many others who have played under Wenger spring upfield to score a goal after we had been defending a set-piece or been under pressure for 5-10 minutes? Hundreds no doubt.

So why are we still playing so open? Because this is without doubt the worst defence for 20 years, and the players and manager know it. Where before it was 1-0 to the Arsenal, now Wenger wants it to be 4-3 to the Arsenal every week. But what happens when we don't get four? We lose 3-0. Winning 6-1 and 6-2 and 4-1 is fantastic and we all love to see goals fly in, but you simply can't do it every week, and sometimes you just have to dig in and grind it out. 0-0 at Sunderland and a win at West Ham after being two up, and we would still be in with a shout even with the defeat yesterday. 11 points is already too much, even with the game in hand. Chelsea are too good to drop that many points and we are almost certain to fold and collapse a few more times before the season’s out as in Manchester, at Sunderland and on Sunday. With our limited striking options and present makeshift defence, even Stoke, Hull and Burnley are going to fancy their chances over the coming month and why shouldn’t they, considering all of them have beaten us in the last year.

So where to now? The Carling Cup is now without a doubt our best chance of a trophy this season after our usual tough 3rd round draw in the FA Cup. Champions League? You’re having a laugh at present! If our injury crisis continues, a spending spree in January will be needed if we are to have any hope of progression beyond the first knockout phase of Europe.
