We started slow against Hull but that was because Hull went hell for leather from the off. No attempts to play football, one man up front and all the rest of their game plan was based on wishful thinking and hope of a miracle goal. There was no way they could keep that pace up for 90 minutes and that's where our crowd lets the team down. We need to understand that games always last 90 minutes and that teams such as Hull can and will be beaten in the last 15 minutes if everyone just keeps their cool and believes that the goal will come. The Tigers were always going to run out of steam either before or after Phil Brown disappeared up his own arse. When our confidence is there it will happen every time, confidence within the team and confidence in the team by the fans. Inevitable winning goals become invincible winning goals, believe you'll get the winner and you will.
From the off Hull's closing was excellent, they gave us little or no space and we got no time on the ball. Fagan was backing in every time and winning free kicks from the totally hapless S (for sh*t) Bennett. They also played on after every single free kick conceded or kicked the ball away, unnoticed by Sh*t Bennett. Apart from this, their illegally blocking runs off the ball were also very effective. Hull also failed to retreat at every free kick and contested every decision, which is why it all kicked off when it did. Again Bennett failed miserably here because (A) we won a free kick and he let three players dispute it (B) he didn't make them retreat (C) Bennett then penalised Nasri for the referee’s own abject total lack of control. That said their tactics were very effective for forty minutes - but only because they were able to exploit the w***er in the black.
When we won the free kick from which we scored, the same thing happened - no retreating the ten yards and much whinging. Brilliant free kick by Denilson - perfect in fact - which begs the question why doesn't he take more?
Their penalty looked to be sheer stupidity by Silvestre from my view in block 15, but on the telly highlights it quite clearly never was in a million years. A poor pen and hilarious that the three Hull players going for the rebound cocked up big time. After that we calmed down and did the stuff in the second half. Well done Almunia though as any penalty save is a great save, no matter how fortuitous.
Diaby's run and the movement of our boys for the second half was brilliant. And aren't we all delighted that it was Ed who tapped home. Big up to the crowd for giving their support to Ed on the day, such things make a big difference. Diaby's run for our third was one of the things we've been missing from midfield and was the icing on the cake of his best performance all season. We could have ended up with four or five but Walcott hasn't got his shooting boots on yet this season. A good call to leave him on the bench and use his pace in the closing stages.
I detest Hull but this game had a lot going for it entertainment wise. Bookings, although not enough of them, an iffy pen, a ruck, great goals, a well deserved scoreline, a ref and manager to abuse with venom, and games from some of our secondary players we needed to get back on song. We're still starting slow because generally speaking our lynchpin Alex Song starts games slowly. We need more patience, on and off the pitch, but three wins and a draw in our latest league games is pointing us in the right direction. United's injuries are killing them right now and ‘Pool are dead and buried. Villa without European matches could last a full season this time out and the Totts are still delivering. So it could be a real scramble this season as more points will be dropped by all the top teams.
Seems strange that I'm hoping for our third choice left-back to be fit for Villa, but such is the way of things this season. Right now is the wrong time to be playing either Villa or Portsmouth but we all know what's needed from these games. Every game is a big game when you're in contention and we are.
