I've managed to calm down a bit since the ManUre defeat, and I have looked at my posting on Online Gooner since and feel it was rightly labelled 'Raw Emotion'. In the week that followed before the Chavski game, I convinced myself not to get my hopes up of the boys somehow pulling off a season saving win over the Chavs. I just didn't want the disappointment that I felt after ManUre and in hindsight, it was obviously a good idea.
Despite what has been said about the match, overall, I think our performance was better and I think we did compete with Chavski a lot better than the weekend before with ManUre. We competed in areas around the park, and I saw some committed challenges - I remember one challenge from Clichy on Anelka where I actually thought Clichy had headbutted the Rat's boot. However, the fact of the matter is that we ultimately lost and there were again a number of reasons in my opinion why.
The main one for me is the lack of a striker. There were just not enough runs behind the Chavs’ defence and the one red hot chance crafted by Fabregas (again) was wasted (again) by Arshavin. I would seriously consider dropping him for the time being - he really is too wasteful and if he had put away the chances in both games, we could be looking at a different result.
Tying in with the lack of strikers is our tactical approach - I can remember countless times that Sagna crossed the ball and I'm still wondering why. Our main front man on the day is 5’3” - how the hell is he going to compete with the monstrous Chav defence? Notice I didn't talk about Clichy attempting to cross the ball - the guy couldn't cross his arms. The times he did try, the ball went high and wide behind the goal. He is a top guy and you can't fault his effort, but personally I think Gibbs will take his place over the next year.
Again, we got caught on the counter attack and this isn't good enough. You think we would have learnt something from the weekend before. Clichy was again at fault for not sticking to his position and I can't help but partly blame Almunia - he really should have done better.
Above all, we are just not strong enough. As much as it pains me to say, Chelsea looked better. They knew exactly how to handle us and took advantage of crap defending... again.
I found the following quote on arsenal.com and was shocked when I read it.
"First of all you must find the players who are better than the players you have. And I believe that our basic problem was not offensive in the two games we lost just now. It was more defensive."
Is the man really losing the plot??
Firstly, we don't have any strikers at the moment, so any striker would be better than no striker. Seriously, he needs to do something about this. We don't need a complete upheaval of playing / coaching staff. What we need is a new striker (Chamakh, I understand, is pretty much a done deal), a new goalkeeper and a new midfielder at the very least. There are probably one or two more positions we can strengthen but these are the main ones. This would give the team more of a spine, something that we are really lacking.
Finally, we have a wealth of former legends that I'm sure would love to come back in a coaching capacity and improve our team. Surely bringing Martin Keown back would help? In 2006 he was part of the coaching set up and during his time there, the team went on an excellent run in the Champions League without conceding. And what about Big Tone - Mr Arsenal himself?? He would love to come back to us as a coach I'm sure! They would be an inspiration for the team and would sort out the way the team defends. Sort it out Wenger!
