Why is it that anyone calling for Wenger to step down is instantly branded a shortsighted, reactionary fool and apparently a fair weather fan, whilst anyone that wants him to remain in charge is unquestionably a considered, sensible-thinking hardcore fan?
The theoretical case for why Wenger's time is coming to an end has been thought about for a long time. Defensive weakness, the lack of tactical flexibility to deal with the most potent threats of other teams, the continued drop in work rate of the players. This is masked by the fact that an under performing Arsenal team is still capable of beating the dross that makes up much of the division.
Every now and again, the theoretical case gains some evidence to help prove itself. In this case, eight examples since April 2009:
Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea
Man Utd 1-0 Arsenal
Arsenal 1-3 Man Utd
Arsenal 1-4 Chelsea
Man Utd 2-1 Arsenal
Arsenal 0-3 Chelsea
Arsenal 1-3 Man Utd
Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal
(The exception, in which the opposition only required a draw (Man Utd 0 Arsenal 0) wasn't exactly the most high tempo, competitive football matches we've ever seen...)
The theory that things are not right under Wenger is highlighted by these results. They prove that Wenger doubters have a strong case to call time on his reign as Arsenal manager and are the reason for the timing of such public decrees of that nature. People are obviously more likely to vocalise their criticism at a time of high emotion following more defeats. But this does not make it instant reaction or ill-conceived thought.
Don't insult your fellow Arsenal fans by calling them shortsighted, you... (Ahem. I think that’s a good place to conclude! - Ed)
