I often wonder what goes through Arsene Wenger’s mind, a very intellectual man who has spent most of his life studying the game, deeply influenced by his Alsatian upbringing and his idealistic vision of the game. As much as the recent defeats hurt us, for Arsene Wenger it must eat him up from inside like an intestinal parasite for he has dedicated everything to his ‘project’. He has put his entire faith in this group of players and even when the majority of us fail to understand this trust he has proved us wrong e.g. the emergence of Alex Song. He has built a modern superclub and ensured our future at the top is secure for years to come. With the global financial crisis finally seeming to affect football, we are in a financial position of most clubs’ envy, playing at one of the world's finest sporting arenas with state of the art training facilities and an excellent youth academy, which will one day leave Arsene Wenger with an unrivalled legacy.
I can’t believe why fans are questioning his position at the club. I understand their frustration at what is approaching five years without a trophy and resembles his decline during his reign at Monaco. My mate Asser, my antithesis, has finally run out of patience, feels a change is needed and is willing to bet me all his life earnings that we won’t win the title this season. Many people may say I’m deluded but I haven’t given up hope.
There are clearly problems that need to be addressed. The defeats to Manure and Chelski resemble recent meetings against them too similarly to be a coincidence. I do feel that the first goal in these games is a massive factor and that we have been unlucky in failing to score this. Chasing the game plays into their hands and the 4-3-3 formation leaves our defense exposed. A return to the 4-4-2 formation should be considered for these games, sacrificing some attacking fluidity in place of defensive stabilty.
However, with 12 games remaining we are only six points behind the leaders with a seemingly much easier run-in. Discounting the home and away games against Manure and Chelski we would be top. We have gained 54 points from the other 66 points available. If we continue this form we will gain 30 points from the remaining 12 games, giving us a total of 82 points. I feel this is enough to secure the title taking into account how unpredictable the league is this season and the run in our two rivals face in comparison to ours. Following the home defeat to Chelski, we were 11 points behind, which we managed to regain, and all our defeats have come in pairs after which we have shown character and consistency. Therefore, there is a much reason to believe.
Finally I leave you with a quote from one of my favourite poems by Rudyard Kipling which portrays Arsene Wenger’s philosophy perfectly – "If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too... you’ll be a Man, my son!" Keep the faith.
