Of sitars and sitters

What is it about Nicklas Bendtner and Burnley?

Support for Ramsey at weekend – nice touch

I almost told the frightfully posh lady adjacent that a sitar is an Indian musical instrument, popularised in the 1960s by Ravi Shankar. It's capable of beautiful melodic sounds. What Super Nic kept orchestrating was the missing of "sitters". Later, Match of the Day ended with February's Goal of the Month. Miss of the Day would have been even harder to choose, comprising a virtual re-run of our game and, crucially, Wolves' Sam Vokes' inexplicable injury time sitar. For us Gooners it was the day's most significant, costing a net two points given who were the beneficiaries at Molineaux of Vokes' profligacy.

After their pre-fight weigh-in, boxers "bulk-up", often adding several kilos (multiples of 2.205 pounds if you insist on imperial) before the first bell. Perhaps opposition goalkeepers should prepare for future Arsenal matches by hiring Brian Jensen's dietician, who's already added Andre Bikey to his speed-dial. The sight of Jensen's imposing frame seems to turn Bendtner's brains to jelly. In a Carling Cup game at Turf Moor, Bendtner missed half of our six one-on-one's with the portly 'keeper. As I recall, we ascribed that trio of misses to petulance, to Super Nic's finding it demeaning to be asked to play with the reserves despite his tender years and lack of first-team games and goals. Having achieved his birthright, then, what's his excuse this time? He could have had a hatful; and it's a hat, remember, to cover a very large head. But for the then scoreline (2-1), he'd never have sported such a wide grin whilst exiting to a standing ovation. We're unlikely to be so forgiving if there's a repeat this evening.

At half-time we learned that, not a million miles East, loanee Jack Wilshere had opened his Bolton account. Why not also mention Jay Simpson's latest goal for QPR and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas' brace for Doncaster? Ex-Gooners Jay Bothroyd (Cardiff) and Matthew Connolly (QPR) were also at it. So much for the narrative that Arsenal under Arsene has been detrimental for the English game. Then again, why let the facts spoil a good story?

One week on, I still cannot 'let go' of that tackle on Ramsey. The sympathy Shawcross continues to elicit is not helping my mental state. Nice touch, though, for the team to appear at kick-off showing such visible support for Aaron. Hopefully the return of injured players will cause Capello to forget that Lovely Lad from The Potteries. But if he ever does achieve an England debut, what better unambiguous message to send him than: Ryan - break a leg (preferably your own this time).
