Arsenal Count The Cost From Brilliant Spectacle

Should Gallas and Cesc have been risked with Premier League hopes still alive?

Arsenal Count The Cost From Brilliant Spectacle

Cesc: Will spot-kick be his final Gunners’ goal?

Well I don't know what to make of that, an extraordinary game of fantasy football where I saw my beloved Arsenal torn to shreds in the first 20 minutes in a way I haven't witness at home since Spartak Moscow did a job on us in the 80's. To our credit we recovered after that and showed great resilience to stay in the tie.

We saw brilliance in abundance and also the Jekyll and Hyde nature of our so-called number one. After four excellent saves that kept us in the tie, he made errors for both of Barca's goals which underlines the importance of replacing him next season. The implications of the game though could have far greater ramifications than just exit from this competition, the gamble to play Gallas and Cesc seems to have seriously backfired and if the worst is realised (Cesc has a hairline fracture) we might not see them play again this season, in Cesc's case possibly never in an Arsenal shirt again.

This will have real impact on the rest of our league season and could well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Winning our home games shouldn't be a problem but winning at Blackburn and Spurs without Cesc, Gallas, Van Persie and possibly Arshavin is going to be a really big ask. As ever I remain eternally optimistic and if we can score first in the Camp Nou we could cause one of the greatest upsets of our illustrious history.

I also feel that Man U and Chelsea will drop points in the run-in, but we will also need a large slice of luck to capitalise and we are in the lap of the footballing gods who are not being particularly kind to us at the moment. I think we will take some confidence from the great comeback last night and I hope Theo and Nasri will step up to the plate. Nasri has shown that he likes to fill the central role when Cesc is not there and I think his best performances have come in Cesc's absences. If we can hang on to the coat tails of the top two until RVP comes back we still have a real chance to nick it, but it really will be against all the odds.
