End Of Season Assessment

Theo: Mountains of pace, molehills of talent

I would have loved to have won the league but the truth is it would only have papered over the cracks and would have fuelled Arsene Wenger's resolute belief that the current squad is good enough. This, as any sane person knows is a long way from the truth. To a certain extent other teams sussed us out this year, all they had to do was play like the away team, sit in and stop us coming through the middle and hit us on the break. It worked again on Wednesday night where we controlled the ball but couldn't pass forward for the majority of the game. It also highlighted how important it is to have a class keeper and if we had switched keepers with Spurs we would have won.

It has also been the worst season I can remember for injuries to important members of the squad, which again highlighted the lack of depth in the playing staff. On the up side, despite all the talk from the pundits of us finishing outside the top four (some even said outside the top six, although they appear to have forgotten that now) we are in a good position to finish third and possibly second which means not having to go through the rigours of pre-qualifying for the Champions League, which is always a bind.

Here's my end of year report for the squad:

1 Almunia - Just not good enough not even to be second choice, his mistakes have cost us big this season

2 Diaby - Squad player who is ok against lesser teams but comes up well short in the big games, diabolical in the first leg against Barca and not much better v Spurs

3 Sagna - Another squad player, I would rather have Eboue at right back. Badly exposed at times this season

4 Fabregas - No comment required, despite all the protestations of the Arsenal board, he may want to leave this summer. I wouldn't blame him

5 Vermaelen - My player of the season, consistent and scored goals. Needs a big ball winning partner and better full backs to play with if we want to be watertight

7 Rosicky - Not the player he was but worth holding on to. See how he is after a full pre-season but looks like a bench warmer

8 Nasri - Ok at times but flatters to deceive. Better in the middle than out wide as proved during Cesc's absences, useless away from home when the pressure’s on

9 Eduardo - Finished unfortunately, lost all of his confidence and bottle. Sad, but he should be on his way to lesser climbs

10 Gallas - Much improved this season, but may be a bench player if AW signs a world class centre back to play with TV

11 Van Persie - World class but injury prone, if he could sustain the form he showed early on for a whole season he will turn into a 30 goal a season striker

12 Vela - Not good enough, too small and lightweight, the Spanish Second Division is calling

14 Walcott - Needs Sat Nav, forever running down blind alleys or directly into someone, mountains of pace, molehills of talent

15 Denilson - A Ray Wilkins for the new millennium, wouldn't know a forward pass if it bit him on the arse

16 Ramsey - Showed real promise, hope he comes back as good as before. Not sure he will be the new Cesc as others suggest but a bright future none the less

17 Song - Our most improved player, pushed TV for player of the year, needs to cut out unnecessary bookings

18 Silvestre - Too old and too slow, which is not his fault, I was amazed when AW signed him, indicative of our current financial state

20 Djourou - Not sure he will be good enough, think he might make a better holding midfielder than a centre back
