Are standards at the lowest level of the Wenger era?

Mannone: Give him the remaining matches

White coats. Chelsea's defeat at Spurs had some of the more optimistic of us foolishly dreaming our title hopes had one last breath. Yesterday's shallow defeat was the final rusty nail in the coffin that made us look crazy for ever thinking this side were capable of such accolades.

White gloves. The game of football is often easier when the occupier of said accessory is a goalkeeper, schooled and experienced in the art of keeping the ball out of the net. At amateur level, a certain level of comforting faith is assumed if you've somehow managed to recruit one for your week’s game.

Shamefully, Arsenal Football Club haven't got one, and we certainly haven't got two. Nor have we the trust in the man between the posts to keep us in a game rather than cost us one.

The cheers to the news of Almunia missing out through the timely and appropriate 'injury' to the wrist immediately turned to concern as the man replacing him was even worse. Happy birthday Fabianski.

He was at fault for the first two goals yesterday. The second more obviously than the first, which he assumed would be cleared before it reached him, thus he failed to stretch his arm in anyway. The second would be comical had he not a cannon on his jersey and it topped off an afternoon in which he failed to show any kind of authority around his area. It was surely his last error and game in an Arsenal shirt. He's had more than his fair chance.

Not nearly good enough.

Opta Sports show our keepers have the ninth best save to shot ratio in the league. Were that position as high as our current league standing, we'd still be in the title race. That was before the Wigan debacle and I'd hazard to guess a high contribution to the ratio came from Mannone at Fulham. Get him in for the remaining three games please Arsene, and make the acquisition of top class No1 your main priority of many changes needed.

Next to be addressed should be the removal of players from this club who fail to realise who they are and what they represent. I'll name names. Diaby. Talented footballer and technically gifted, but the way he ambles about the pitch in no great hurry with no great hunger is simply not good enough. He is not alone. Rosicky is another whose talent cannot be questioned but has failed to apply himself in the right manner of late. For Bendtner's hard work and goals, the likes of he and Denilson are squad players only, yet they've been first choice more often than not due to unsurprising injuries, and we've suffered. I could go on, but you know.

It has all come far too easy to a lot of our players. Surrounded by peers of the same age and lack of medals, only now in Sol do they have someone around to tell them when standards have slipped. They did on Sunday to perhaps the lowest level of the Wenger era.

The boss said we would fight for the championship whilst it was mathematically possible. Maybe he forgot to tell the players. Assuming the game was won, they switched off and stopped working, victory arrogantly expected against a dirge of a Wigan side.

If getting beat by the best in Barcelona held no shame, yesterday’s neglect against such a poor side should see the majority hang their heads.

At such low moments I comfort my Arsenal belief with the faith that Wenger will have been just as hurt by the defeat as I am. If we are to take anything from such a diabolical and careless display, I hope it proves to the boss that major surgery and a change in attitude are no longer avoidable.

If Arsene really does know he'll address things in the summer as we probably, hopefully, finish the season exactly where our season dictates we should.

Third best and not good enough.
