How can it be that the vast majority of supporters (whom have expressed dissatisfaction at Wenger’s blind spots) are almost to a man critical of exactly the same things? There is no need to go into all the usual observations from the last 3-4 years, but why have our predictions always been 100% spot on, at the business end of each of those years? Why does Wenger not see the blatant obvious shortcomings in his teams that the rest of us have been able to see so clearly? Remember this is the same Wenger whom in his first full season in charge won the double and subsequently founded the Invincibles team. How can this same man have morphed into someone who is so blind and stubborn to not see the path he has taken is so flawed in certain areas?
Hence the question:- Do you/we still trust Wenger’s judgements? Because let’s just for the sake of argument say that this summer he is given say £60-70 million to spend (highly unlikely I know). Would he simply not buy more clones of what he already has in abundance? Would you truly trust him now to buy a quality goalkeeper having proven his judgements have been so poor with the exception of Jens Lehmann? Who would he buy for central defence when players like Cygan, Senderos and Silvestre are still fresh in the mind (granted he did do well with his choice of Vermaelen). What about a holding midfielder when Denilson is given his total backing etc?
I don’t know the answers to those questions, other than that I for one have lost faith in his judgements. Not just in the faith he has in all of his squad, some of whom undoubtedly deserve his it. But other things like his tactical acumen, i.e. his inability to change tactics during a game if things are not working out, his appalling use of subs, his inability to be pragmatic rather than always continuing to play pretty football. His zero options if his only plan A does not work (there simply is no plan B, let alone C). His ridiculous statements after each game that now make me cringe and reach for the off button as quickly as possible. His obsession with lightweight small players who spend more time on the treatment table than on the pitch, which is because we play in the most physical league in the world, and hence sturdier players are what’s also needed (e.g. Rooney at Manure and Drogba at Chelski) to augment the nimbler players. I can give numerous other examples but hopefully you get my drift. The fact is he appears to have total control of our football club and has surrounded himself with yes men. His or the club’s inability to sort out our medical team, which must be the laughing stock of that profession, just as the Wembley pitch is to all groundsmen nationwide.
In summary I believe Wenger needs to take a good long hard look in the mirror and be honest to himself, and in turn us, and admit that although he does have the basis of a very good team with some exceptional players, he is letting them and us down by not strengthening his squad with quality replacements to augment what he already has built up. He must not treat defence as some kind of dirty word not to be considered. However if he were to come to the same conclusions most of us came to at least three years ago he must also learn to be ruthless and chop out the numerous players who simply fall short, either by lack of talent and ability or grit and determination. The question would however still remain:- Can we still trust his judgement?
