Peter Hill-Wood our 74-year-old ex-Etonian chairman has once again been saying all the wrong things at the wrong time. Quite why he's still chairman is a mystery given that his shareholding amounts to a relative pittance, certainly far lower than 1% of the Club. I always thought that figureheads were supposed to be substantial attractive individuals, the embodiment of an organisation exuding intelligence and being utterly worldly wise. Not so at The Arsenal it seems.
As with all the other so-called stable long-term family heirloomers who were, or are still just about on board the Arsenal gravy train they've all taken their money and run. Or are about to. The Bellingers, Hill-Woods, Carrs, Bracewell-Smiths and Gibbs were all considered to be proud so called custodians of a mighty footballing institution. Or at least that's what they've always proclaimed from behind their old school ties. However to a man they've all sold out to the wide-boys. The Club loving wide-boys such as the David Deins of this world, who have in turn flogged the Club off to disinterested and highly questionable foreigners. Oligarchs and cowboys who've seen the international possibilities of creaming a world-wide franchise. And yet we still retain this 74-year-old as a figurehead. Why exactly would we want a farcical cartoon character at the helm?
The press always used to tap him up for some juicy quotes following one of his many heavy banking lunches. These days he pops up randomly when he's least wanted to tell all those potential selling clubs and agents that Arsene has bucket loads of money available so get your noses in the trough boys. How very helpful. Then he p*sses off our Club captain by suggesting he wouldn't make the Barca first XI. What a brain-dead and seriously stupid thing to utter. Especially so given that at the very same time he was revealing a presumably highly confidential conversation allegedly made by one of the world’s other leading Clubs to which he wasn't even a direct party.
I'm certainly no diplomat, as you can tell, but would suggest I could do a far better job than Hill-Wood when blind drunk. Remind me what it is Hill-Wood does again? Other than to maintain those solid 100 year-old traditions of the Diamond Club and farcically host the AGM and dish out dumb random statements far more banal and crass than anything such intellectuals as Rio Ferdinand or John Terry could ever dream up.
