There can be no doubt that Arsene Wenger has been a wonderful manager - the best that I have seen in my fifty years of watching Arsenal Football Club. His achievements are immense - League titles; FA Cup triumphs; an unbeaten season; football that takes your breath away; overseeing the building of a wonderful new stadium and raising the profile of the Club so that most neutrals love to watch us play - the list goes on and on! The man is a legend and I am proud and privileged to think that I have been able to enjoy "The Wenger Years", travelling backwards and forwards from Birmingham to watch us play.
However, time marches on and there is a danger that staying in one place too long causes one to overstay their welcome. I love Arsene Wenger and what he has done for Arsenal but I now feel that he is in danger of losing that wonderful reputation by refusing to step down. I no longer believe that Arsene has a trophy in him and even I am beginning to get annoyed at listening to the same old words and seeing the same old outcome to each season.
We knew at the beginning of this season that our squad was not strong enough to win the Premiership. Oh yes the first team was good enough to fulfil Arsene's promise if they all stayed fit but that was never going to happen. I have to question the training methods that affords us so many long-term injuries. Arsene had to buy. We knew Arsene was wrong when he said that we didn't need a top goalkeeper and how we were proved right. We knew that we could not complete at top level when the likes of Silvestre, Sagna, Bentner, Eduardo etc were going to carry our hopes. I'm worried that Arsene's tactical awareness has gone - the Wigan debacle and v Barcelona, leaving Messi to run free - are just two recent examples of a worrying naivety.
I wish Arsene would retire gracefully - I certainly would not like to see him face the sack. However, whether he stays for one more year or five more years, the fact is that Arsenal will win no more trophies under him. We will get promises - like Delboy’s "Next year we will all be millionaires." But it is not going to happen and I do not want to witness any longer the sad spectacle of Arsene making us promises that he patently is unable to deliver.
