On Arsenal’s budget, Arsene is still the best man for the job

The club can’t yet afford a manager with the demands of a Mourinho or a Benitez

On Arsenal’s budget, Arsene is still the best man for the job

Arsene: Best bet on existing budget

Would a club earn more money from reaching the semis or quarters of the Champions League or from winning the FA Cup? Just a thought, if you are more likely the earn more then this might be a contributory factor to why we prioritise the Champions League. Perhaps Arsene doesn't think like that, but possibly the board does? So just wondered really. You also have the benefit of a Champions League run helping to recruit and keep the cheaper foreign players.

It is pretty obvious that Arsenal have stretched themselves to the limit to build the new stadium. A stadium which I believe will help make us a football superpower once the bulk of the debt is cleared. It is also pretty obvious the Edelman got the push because although he secured cheap loans, he overloaded the club’s debt with the development of the old stadium and cost us transfer funds when we sorely needed them.

It is pretty naive to think that the Board and Arsene don't tell lies or at least distort the truth to encourage the less devout punters to put their bums on seats while we are going through this stage of transition, talking up what we have got but knowing that realistically there are holes that only luck can paper over. There are encouraging noises that there will be some money this summer, but then maybe that is just more PR to get people to renew their season tickets. But optimist that I am, I'd like to think not.

I am glad that Danny Fiszman and the board didn't go with Dein's plans to rent Wembley. It wouldn't have felt like home and look what is happening to the pitch, having to be re-laid every five minutes. We would have had no control over that. I am also glad that we are resisting recruiting a sugar daddy. I am just old fashioned I guess and don't want to see the club turned into a circus, run by some rich mogul with no interest in football who treats it like his train set to massage his ego. I know there have been rich chairmen in the past, but they often had some real genuine love of the club or at least the game.

It is probably true that we pay some of our players more than they are worth, but then it would be more expensive to recruit new ones and more risky. While we are qualifying for the Champions League it is best to keep what we have. But having said that, quality is growing in other clubs, so I do think we will need to spend some money this summer.

I was at the Wigan game and I felt physically sick afterwards. It does look like Arsene has lost his touch a bit, the players that he has now don't seem to have the same motivation. Maybe it's them, maybe it's him or a combination of both. But I think that the truth is that for the next few seasons we can't afford another manager of equal or better quality. You could get Rafa now or even Mourinho but they would come in demanding £100 million in transfer funds and we just don't have it.

I will be renewing my season ticket next season and I will be travelling to away matches. If we get a lucky season next season, rather than suffering the bad luck that we did this season, then we might be in with a shout. I no longer think that light shines out of Arsene's arse, but I think he is the best man for the job to keep us at least where we are until the club is financially secure enough to take its mantle among the super powers.

I will be taking it game by game, like people do for lesser clubs, just going in the hope that we will win that day and see what comes of it. That's what I did in the early 80's anyhow. This may sound negative, but I really do believe that the club is moving in the right direction, albeit very slowly. Third is better than fourth after all. I have been an Arsenal fan for some time now, since I was a small boy and I will be an Arsenal fan until I am brown bread. Sometimes I think you just have to bide your time, but then I could be wrong. Roll on the summer.
